BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- A late charge by the UAB baseball team fell short as Alabama defeated the Blazers, 7-4, on Tuesday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
UAB (16-21) received a two-hit game from John Frost, who extended his hitting streak to 17 games. The Decatur, Ala., native clubbed a double and a two-run homer, his second big fly of the season, and scored two in the loss.
The Blazers found themselves in a 7-0 hole as Alabama (23-16) scored all its runs over the first four frames.
However, UAB started to get things in motion offensively in the sixth when Ivan De Jesus drove in Frost who had doubled earlier in the frame.
In the eighth, the Blazers turned up the heat as Chase Davis led off with a walk, which was followed by Frost's two-run bomb. Later in the frame, Harry Clark rocketed a RBI double to right-center field to pull the Green and Gold within three. With runners on second and third and one out, Jay Shaw recorded the final two outs of the frame to escape the threat.
UAB would bring the tying run to plate again in the ninth as Prinzing and De Jesus each drew walks. But, Shaw, who collected his first save of the season, induced a flyout to center to the end game and snap the Blazers' four-game winning streak over the Tide.
UA's Mike Oczypok (3-0) earned the victory, scattering five hits and allowing one run (earned) over the first six frames.
Alex Luna (0-3) suffered the loss in his third start of the season for UAB. The righty allowed four earned runs in 2.2 innings and tied a career-high with five strikeouts.
Tanner Bryant joined Frost with two hits on the night, as UAB finished with eight base knocks as club.
Ben Moore paced the Tide offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
