GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina rallied for the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning to claim a 3-2 Conference USA victory over the visiting Rice baseball team Saturday afternoon in Greenville, N.C.

The Owls are now 22-11 overall and remain in a tie for first place in the C-USA standings with a 5-3 league record. East Carolina improved to 15-16 overall and 1-4 in conference action.

After East Carolina tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning the foes remained deadlocked for another five scoreless frames. Rice had runners in scoring position in the 11th, 12th and 13th, but ECU worked out of trouble each time.

In the bottom of the 13th, Jack Reinheimer singled with one out and then stole second base with two away. Zach Houchins singled through the left side and the Owls came up with a throw to the plate that was not in time to get Reinheimer.

It was the only run Rice junior right-hander John Simms allowed in 5.1 innings of relief work. He scattered four hits and struck out three. Jordan Stephens started and allowed two runs in 6.2 innings. Blake Fox was spotless in 0.2 innings.

Rice opened the scoring in the top of the second. Michael Ratterree drew a one-out walk and advanced to scoring position on a fielder's choice. He sprinted home on Skyler Ewing's two-out single to left for a 1-0 advantage.

The Owls added another in the sixth. Ford Stainback led off with a walk and moved up to second base on Michael Aquino's sacrifice bunt. Stainback scored on an RBI single by Ratterree to make it 2-0.

East Carolina came right back with a run in the bottom of the frame. Reinheimer led off with a home run to left field. ECU tied the contest in the bottom of the seventh. Drew Reynolds hit a double to right-center and scored on a two-out single by Travis Watkins.

The C-USA weekend series is tied 1-1 and concludes on Sunday. Start time in the finale is set for 10 am Eastern Time (9 am Central).
