UCF Claims Saturday Contest Over Baseball, 6-1
March 23, 2013
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- John Frost gave UAB an early lead with a RBI single in the bottom first, but UCF scored a pair of runs in the second and fifth frames, as the Knights would eventually win 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
The loss dropped UAB to 9-13 and 0-2 in league play, while UCF improved to 16-9 and 2-0 in C-USA action. The two teams will square off for the series finale on Sunday, with first pitch set for 12:30 p.m. CT. The game will be on the radio at WJOX-AM 690 with David Crane on the call.
UAB scored in the bottom of the first when Frost roped a RBI single to bring Ryan Prinzing around from second base to take the early advantage.
Unfortunately for UAB, the lead was short lived. UCF bounced back to take a 2-1 cushion in the top of the second, thanks to a two-run homer off the bat of Austin Johnston, that stayed just inside the left-field foul pole.
It appeared as though the Knights would add to their lead in the third, but Tanner Bryant (2-2) bore down and struck out Parker Webster to strand the bases loaded in the third.
UCF tacked on two runs in the fifth on a two-run double from Webster and single runs in the seventh and eighth innings on run scoring base knocks from Chris Taladay and JoMarcos Woods to round out Saturday’s scoring.
Bryant, who pitched well enough to win, was tagged with the loss for the Blazers, working six innings and allowing four runs (two earned). The righty walked a pair and struck out five.
