Track and Field and Cross Country Student-Athletes Named Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year Award Winners

Collingwood competed during the indoor season and posted a personal and team-best mark in the shot put with a throw of 58'10.25" in the shot. He earned third team All-C-USA honors while tallying five of the top eight finishes in 2013. In 2012, Collingwood was a NCAA East Preliminary qualifier while competing in the discus. He placed in the top 12 and advanced to the NCAA National Meet with a school record performance.
Collingwood is an accounting major with a 3.91 GPA
Ledgerwood who was named the Southern Miss Student-Athlete of the Year, owns the record in the 10K with time of 34:21.82. She finished fourth at the C-USA Outdoor Championship. She turned in a school record performance in the 5K at the C-USA Outdoor Championship with time of 16:45.09. She also had a school record performance in the 3K indoor with time of 9:38.30 while finishing fourth at the C-USA Indoor Meet.
Ledgerwood finished 15th overall at the NCAA South Regional in Tallahassee, Fla., with a personal-best time of 20:33.1 in the 6K race, earned her first all-region honor. She has posted seven top 20 finishes including two individual titles. She also earned first team All-Conference USA after finishing third overall at the C-USA Championship. She was a repeat performer for the 2012 Cross Country All-Academic team.
The Yuma, Ariz., native is a forensics major with a 3.93 GPA.
"I am extremely excited to learn that Richard and Stephanie earned scholar athletes of the year awards," Head Coach Kevin Stephen said. "In our program at Southern Miss it begins and ends with academics. Our students -athletes have bought in, and are on board with our goals to elevate our academic standard and compete with the best in the nation academically as well as athletically. Their hard work has paid off and I am extremely proud that they have been recognized. My hope is that continues to motivate my student-athletes to achieve new academic heights at Southern Miss."
Scholar-athletes were selected from C-USA's full-time and affiliate institutions in 20 sports (combining indoor and outdoor track & field). Tennis players Cliff Marsland of Tulsa and Courtney Collins of Memphis were repeat winners from 2011-12. UTEP's Risper Kimaiyo was named a C-USA Scholar-Athlete in 2010-11. UAB senior track & field student-athlete Rhiannon Johns was also a repeat recipient, but represented women's cross country a year ago.
