UTEP Track & Field Signs Distance Runner

EL PASO – UTEP track and field associate head coach Paul Ereng announced the signing of Deon Clifford, a steeplechase runner from British Columbia, Canada, to join the men’s team at the start of the 2013 season.
“We are very excited to have Deon Clifford join the UTEP track and cross country teams,” said Ereng. “He is a very talented athlete and we hope to see him progress at a national level.”
Clifford participated in the 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships representing Canada in the 2,000m steeplechase, clocking in a time of 5:51.47 to finish eighth overall. He took first and third at the 2011 Legion Canadian Youth Championships in the 2,000m steeplechase and 1,500m with times of 5:49.65 and 3:53.83, respectively.
Clifford comes to UTEP from Earl Marriott High School, where he lead the squad with three gold medals in the 800m, 1,5000m and 3,000m at the 2010 Track and Field Championships. He posted personal-best in the 1,500m and 3,000m at the 2011 BC High School Track Championships with times of 3:56.99 and 8:47.63, respectively.
