C-USA Announces Final Outdoor Track & Field Honors

IRVING, Texas - After winning a national title in the women's triple jump, Southern Miss' GANNA DEMYDOVA was named Conference USA Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, as voted on by the league's head coaches.
Demydova won the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field triple jump title with a meet-record performance of 14.20-meters (46-7.25), earning her First Team USTFCCCA All-America honors. The Ukraine native also captured the NCAA East Preliminary triple jump crown with a leap of 13.99m (45-10.75). The Southern Miss graduate left the C-USA Outdoor Championship with a gold medal and conference record leap of 14.03m (46-0.25) in the same event. At the end of the league championship, she was honored with the Co-Female Performance of the Meet award along with teammate Tori Bowie who also bettered the conference record with a first-place mark of 6.78m (22-3) in the long jump. Demydova owns the school, conference and national record in the triple jump.
After earning First Team All-America merits in the 100m and 200m plus winning the league's 100m title UCF freshman OCTAVIOUS FREEMAN was selected as the 2012 C-USA Female Track Athlete of the Year. The Lake Wales, Fla., native placed fourth at nationals in 200 with a time of 23.25 and fifth in the 100 crossing in 11.41. Freeman was named C-USA Freshman of the Meet after winning the 100m in a championship record time of 11.09, finishing third in the 200m (23.53) and ran the second leg of the winning 4x100m relay team (43.47). At the Pepsi Relays in April, she posted a then-world-leading time of 11.10 in 100m that qualified her for the U.S. Olympic Trials in June.
Taking the men's top field honor was All-American DENNIS ALIOTTA of East Carolina. The senior becomes the first Pirate, male or female, to earn a C-USA Track & Field Athlete of the Year honor. Aliotta capped off his collegiate career by earning Second-Team USTFCCCA All-America accolades as he finished 10th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the shot put with a toss of 18.92m (62-1). He also posted a fourth-place finish (19.30m) in the shot put at the NCAA East Preliminary. At the C-USA Championships, the Staten Island, N.Y., native was awarded Performance of the Meet and a gold medal after recording a meet record toss of 19.39m (63-7.5) in the shot put. He also won the event at the 2010 conference championship.
All-Americans CARL STONES of Tulsa and ERROL NOLAN of Houston have been voted C-USA Track Co-Athletes of the Year.
Stones became Tulsa's first outdoor All-America First Team selection when he finished eighth (8:46.67) in the 3,000m steeplechase at the NCAA Championships. The senior also won the event at the 2012 C-USA Outdoor Championships for the second-straight year as he broke the meet record with a time of 8:53.39. The Round Rock, Texas, native earned 18 points for Tulsa at the league meet as he won the steeplechase and finished second in the 5,000m.
Nolan earned Second Team All-America honors in the 400m after he crossed the finish line in an eight-place semifinal time of 45.28. He also completed on the men's 4x400m relay team (3:08.08) at nationals that earned Honorable Mention All-America accolades. The Rosenberg, Texas, native was one of three two-time gold medalists at the 2012 C-USA Outdoor Championships as he won the men's 200m (20.78) and 400m (45.56). Overall, the junior is a four-time C-USA Champion as he owns three outdoor titles in the 400m, the most in league history, ties two other for the most titles in the 200m with a pair.
This is the fourth year Conference USA has awarded a Female and Male Track Athlete of the Year and Field Athlete of the Year.
