The 2012 Capital One Academic All-District ® Men's and Women's Track/Cross Country Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Conference USA placed nine student-athletes on these teams.
Five standouts from Rice were honored. Becky Wade, Allison Pye, and Sophie Peeters were highlighted on the women's Capital One Academic District VII First Team while Matt Carey and Dan Sloat earned first team accolades for the second-straight year on the men's side.
Carey, a recent Rice graduate (Phi Beta Kappa), posted a 4.0 grade point average as a chemistry and economics major. The San Antonio product, has been accepted into Rice's Jesse H. Jones School of Business as well as the Baylor College of Medicine. At the 2011 Conference USA Cross Country Championship, Carey placed 26th overall.
A Rice graduate from Sammamish, Wash., Sloat majored in civil and environmental engineering and also sported a perfect 4.0 GPA. He placed fourth in the 800m at the 2012 C-USA Indoor championship.
Wade, a history, sociology, and psychology major, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Rice with a 4.00 GPA. The Dallas native has been honored as Rice's top female student-athlete with the Joyce Pounds Hardy Award and was also awarded a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. This past year she earned All-America accolades for cross country and for the 5000m at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championship. Wade will shoot for her third All-America title this year when she represents Rice at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 10,000m.
This is Pye's third Academic All-District VII selection. She is a recent Rice graduate with a 3.97 GPA in policy studies as well as kinesiology and will be attending medical school. Pye, from Cypress, Texas, placed sixth at the 2011 C-USA Cross Country Championship and third in the 5000m and fourth in the 3000m at the 2012 C-USA Indoor Championship. During the 2012 C-USA Outdoor Championship, she finished second in the 5000m and fifth in the 10,000m.
Peeters is another Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Rice with a 4.0 GPA as a psychology and kinesiology major. She also will be attending medical school. On the track, Peeters placed eighth in the 800m at the 2012 C-USA Indoor Championship.
UAB placed two females on the first team, while Houston and Tulsa had one honoree each.
For the third time in her career, UAB senior Rhiannon Johns earned Capital One Academic All-District IV first team accolades. Classmate Kristina Vaughn appears on her first all-district first team.
Johns, a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, boasts a 4.0 GPA in mathematics. Last season, she was a Capital One Academic All-America, and the year before that was a 2010 USTFCCCA All-Academic team and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV track and field/cross country team selection. The distance runner is a three-time C-USA Academic Medal recipient and C-USA Honor Roll selection. During the 2011 cross country season, she placed ninth of 92 at the C-USA Championships and finished 27th of 191 at NCAA South Regional.
Vaughn owns a 4.0 GPA in biology. The Madison, Ala. native is a four-time recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal and a two-time C-USA All-Academic Team selection. On the track, she broke UAB's 3,000m steeplechase record (10:30.25) at the Stanford Invitational, a time that ranks eighth in the South Region. She won the 3,000m Steeplechase (10:35.81) title at the C-USA Outdoor Championship and led the Blazers to a second-place finish as she anchored the Distance Medley Relay team that set a school record time of 11:37.00.
Houston junior Megan Frausto captures her first All-District VII second team honor. The Royse City, Texas, native sports a 3.91 GPA in kinesiology, while earning USTFCCCA All-America second team merits in the pentathlon. She placed 12th in the event at the 2012 NCAA Indoor National Championships and claimed the C-USA Indoor pentathlon title as well as finishing second in the heptathlon at the conference meet. Frausto plans on attending medical school at the completion of her career.
Senior Bill Martin of Tulsa was named to the Capital One Academic All-District VII First Team. Martin has excelled this season both in the classroom and on the track. He graduated with a 3.94 grade-point average in biochemistry. He recently competed in the quarterfinal round of the 1,500m run at the NCAA West Preliminary in Austin, Texas, finishing 21st with a time of 4:00.98. Martin has been named to three C-USA All-Academic teams in his career (2010 and 2012 cross country, 2010 track & field). He has been named to Tulsa's Dean's List seven times, and he was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team all four years.
First-team Academic All-District ® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
