Track & Field All-Academic Team Announced

IRVING, Texas - Twenty-two student-athletes have been named to the 2012-13 Conference USA Track and Field All-Academic Teams. There were 11 men and 11 women voted onto the teams by the league's sports information directors for the sport. Honorees must hold a minimum 3.2 grade point average and have used a year of eligibility. All 22 honorees boast academic marks better than a 3.4 average and nine of the 12 women sport GPAs of 3.75 or better. Three finished the academic year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Four men and three women are repeat honorees, while Rice leads the list with four award winners on the men's side and two on the women's list.
Seniors GABE CUADRA and ALEXANDER ZINCHENKO of Rice lead the list of repeat honorees. Cuadra picks up his fifth C-USA All-Academic honor (2010-13) as a two-time All-Academic team member for track & field and three times for cross country. The C-USA Academic Medalist owns a 3.77 GPA as a mathematical economic analysis and business major. He has earned five President's Honor Roll appearances. The 2010-11 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award winner, most recently finished in fifth place at the C-USA Outdoor Championship in the 10,000m (30:44.36) and placed ninth in the 5,000m (14:44.32). He also scored twice in the C-USA Indoor Championships in the 3000m and 5000m races.
Zinchenko is a three-time C-USA All-Academic pick (2011-13). The senior owns a 3.59 GPA in political science and has appeared on four Commissioner's Honor Rolls and the last two USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams and President's Honor Rolls. Zinchenko earned All-C-USA second team outdoor honors with a silver medal performance in the discus and placed fourth in the shot put. During the indoor season, he also placed fifth in the shot put.
Classmate MATT CAREY is also earning his second nod to the All-Academic squad as he held a place on the 2011 Track & Field All-Academic Team. The graduate student is currently pursuing his MBA with a 3.94 GPA. A three-time Scholar-Athlete of the Year at Rice, Carey earned his undergraduate degrees in economics and pre-med with a 4.24 GPA. He placed 11th in the 10,000 meters at the 2013 C-USA Championship.
With a 4.0 GPA in philosophy, UTEP's RICHARD OLSSON is making his second appearance on the C-USA All-Academic Team. The junior was named to the 2011 and 2012 C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and was an Academic Medal recipient in 2011. After suffering a shoulder injury at the 2012 NCAA Preliminaries, Olsson opened the 2013 season stronger than ever with a personal best of 72.53m (237-11) in the javelin throw to rank 12th in the nation. He earned a silver medal in the javelin (225-02) at the 2013 C-USA Outdoor Championships, where the Miners won their second team title and first since 2008.
The women are led by three-time All-Academic honorees in senior STEPHANIE LEDGERWOOD of Southern Miss and RHIANNON JOHNS of UAB, along with repeat selection from a year ago in UTEP junior JANICE JACKSON.
Ledgerwood sports a 3.92 GPA in forensic science and has appeared on the Commissioner's Honor Roll four times, is a two-time C-USA Academic Medal Award winner and owns five President's List merits. The Southern Miss 2012 Student-Athlete of the Year, she set a school record in the 10K with time of 34:21.82 prior to establishing a program best in the 5K at the C-USA Outdoor Championship with a fourth-place time of 16:45.09. During the indoor season, Ledgerwood clocked in a 16:56.84 in the 5K to finish fourth at the C-USA Indoor Meet.
Johns returns to the All-Academic squad after earning a spot on the 2010 and 2011 teams as a mathematics major and economics minor. She was awarded Presidential Honors as an undergrad with a 4.0 GPA. The two-time Capital One Academic All-American is currently pursuing her master's degree in mathematics. Johns holds the outdoor school records for the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, as well as the indoor record for the 5,000m.
Jackson was the 2013 C-USA champion in the 100m hurdles. She posted a personal-best time of 13.11 to rank 14th nationally. It is also the second-fastest time in program history. The indoor season saw Jackson victorious in every 60m hurdles race she competed in, including the C-USA Championships (8.17). That time qualified her for nationals. Jackson sports a 3.88 GPA in multidisciplinary studies and has twice been named to the C-USA All-Academic teams and as a recipient of the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal.
Conference USA will be represented by 31 student-athletes at the 2013 NCAA Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
