After a very competitive Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, 160 student-athletes have qualified for the upcoming NCAA East and West Preliminary Rounds. Both preliminary rounds will be take place Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26.
The University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville will host the three-day East Preliminary Round, while Austin, Texas, and Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas will serve as host to the West Regional starting Thursday.
The top 12 finishers in each event will move on to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, June 6-9. Out of 32 conferences that qualified individuals for regional action, Conference USA ranked among the top 10 for most entries. The women's teams have qualified the seventh-most entries with 93, while the men rank ninth with 67.
All 12 women's programs will be sending at least two athletes to opening rounds, highlighted by C-USA champion UCF with a league-best 21 athletes. Houston will have 18 participants, followed by UTEP with 10, Southern Miss with nine and seven from East Carolina. SMU (6), Rice (5), Memphis (4), Tulane (4), UAB (4), Marshall (3) and Tulsa (2) rounds out C-USA's women's qualifiers.
The three-time C-USA outdoor champion Houston men will sport a conference-best 16 participants, while East Carolina and UTEP will have 12 each. Memphis (9), Tulsa (8), Southern Miss (6) and Rice (4) will also appear in first round action.
The league will be strong in sprints and hurdles as well as jumps and throw events.
Coming off its third-straight Conference USA Outdoor Championship, the No. 14 UCF women's track and field team will send a school-record 21 student-athletes to opening rounds. The Knights topped last year's record number of 12 competitors as UCF will be represented in 11 different events.
The Knights claim 12 marks that rank among the region's top 25. Freshman Octavious Freeman, sophomore Aurieyall Scott and senior Sheila Paul hold six of UCF's region-best seven entries in the 100 and 200 meters. Freeman won gold in the 100m and bronze in the 200m at the C-USA Championships as she heads into the preliminaries with the third-best time in both events. Scott also ranks among the region's top 10 in both events after emerging as league champion in the 200 and runner-up in the 100. Paul took silver in the 200 to help UCF earn a clean sweep of the podium in the event at the Championships.
Southern Miss women's team had six athletes earn nine entries. Seniors Tori Bowie and Ganna Demydova lead the group, ranking first in the East in the long jump and triple jump, respectively. Bowie owns the school-record marks in the long jump at 6.78m (22-3). Demydova owns a No. 1 standing as well, ranking atop the region in the triple jump with a career-best and school-record marks of 14.03m (46-00.50). Demydova also qualified to compete in the long jump while Bowie will compete in the 100 meters. Bowie, the defending indoor and outdoor national champion in the long jump, also sports the region's eighth best time of 11.28 in the 100 meters.
Juniors Chris O'Hare of Tulsa and Errol Nolan of Houston tops the men's list as the pair ranks among the USTFCCCA Top 10 in the 1500m and 400m, respectively.
O'Hare, 2012 NCAA Indoor champion in the mile, holds the nation's second-fastest time of 3:37.95 in the 1500m this season. He finished 13th at the NCAA Championship last year to earn USTFCCCA All-America second team honors. The All-American also defended his titles in the 800m and 1,500m at the conference meet. O'Hare has yet to lose a race at the indoor and outdoor league championships.
Nolan is also undefeated at the conference outdoor meet in the 400m and is a nine-time gold medalist in indoor and outdoor league action. He's won the 400m the last three years and 200m the last two outdoor seasons. Nolan captured the 2010 and 2012 indoor titles in both events but did not race in the 2011 championship. Most recently, he clocked a time of 45.56 at the 2012 C-USA Championship to rank 10th in the nation in the 400m.
