BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky has named redshirt sophomore Nora Mehl as one of the 12 student-athletes that will receive the winter C-USA Spirit of Service award.

"Nora is an exceptional athlete," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "She portrays what the student-athlete is all about. This award is well deserved. I am glad Nora is a Blazer."

The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award will be presented three times throughout the season, with the group of honorees representing Conference USA's winter sports: men's and women's basketball, indoor track & field, rifle and swimming.

Mehl competes in multiple events for the Blazers, including the pentathlon, heptathlon, jumps and throws. In 2009, she won the bronze medal in the high jump at the CÂÂ]USA Indoor Track and Field Championships while also placing fourth in the pentathlon.

The Rottweil, Germany native volunteers regularly in Birmingham at various events including the Great American Cross Country meet, Into the Streets, and Down the Alley. In addition, Mehl was a volunteer at the Red Nose Ball benefitting the Ronald McDonald House and at the VA Hospital in Birmingham. The psychology major is an officer program director of the Intercultural Committee at UAB and is a member of numerous honor societies on campus.
