Jan. 24, 2013
GREENVILLE, N.C. –The East Carolina track and field squad is looking to continue its hot start to the indoor season as the Pirates travel to State College, Pa., to compete in the Penn State National beginning on Friday, January 25 and concluding Saturday, January 26.
Last week, the Pirates set five school records at the Virginia Tech Invitational while winning six events. Senior Tiffany Harris won the women’s 300-meter with a school record time of 38.18, while junior Olivia Slate (2:54.09) posted an ECU record-breaking time in the women’s 1,000-meter run, and junior Erin Tucker bested her previous time of 8.52 in the women’s 60-meter hurdles for another record-setting time. Junior Henry Johnson’s mark of 15-9.75 (4.82m) in the men’s pole vault was also good for a new ECU record and senior Drew Kanz tied the East Carolina men’s high jump record with a mark of 7-foot-1 (2.16m).
The Pirates have used the past week to prepare for the upcoming competition at Penn State and are looking to build on the success from previous two meets of the 2013 indoor season, while setting the tone for the remainder of the year. The Penn State National will consist of more than 40 programs and will feature several top athletes from around the nation.
Next on the schedule for the ECU track and field team is the Spire Invitational in Geneva, Ohio on Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9.
