JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After missing out on the NCAA Outdoor Championships by one place last season, senior Dennis Aliotta left no doubt in 2012 as he finished fourth in the shot put at the NCAA East Preliminary Round Saturday at Hodges Stadium.
Aliotta's mark of 19.30 meters was his second-best of the year, just behind his Conference USA-winning heave of 19.39 meters which is also a program record.
The women's 4x400 relay squad finished in 15th place but was unable to earn a spot in the national championship after qualifying last season. Aiesha Goggins, Tiffany Harris, Tania Minkins and Tyshonda Hawkins end their seasons with a collective time of 3:37.86.
The men's 4x100 relay team, consisting of Desmond Lawrence, Austin Lewis, Quinton Harley and Antonial Marshall fell just two slots shy of qualifying for the national final, recording at time of 40.26 to take 14th place. The other Pirate representative on the track was senior Brittany Copeland who captured 33rd in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:59.72.
There were three other field athletes in action Saturday as junior Drew Kanz
O'Shea ended up 25th in the high jump at 2.07 meters while senior Kim Kanala
was 36th in the hammer with a mark of 53.10 meters and junior Stephen Hodapp
produced a 38th-place result in the pole vault - posting a mark of 4.87 meters.
Three-time All-America and three-time defending Conference USA outdoor high jump champion Tynita Butts will be joined by classmate Quinton Harley and Aliotta at the NCAA Outdoor Championships which are scheduled for June 6-9 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. It will be the second career appearance for Butts as she took seventh her freshman season in the event. The schedule for the national finals will be announced next week.
