Austin - Senior distance runner Becky Wade advance to the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship with an 11th-place finish in the 10,000m-run at the NCAA West Preliminary Round at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus Thursday night.
From Dallas and Ursuline Academy, Wade posted a time of 34:19.76. The top 12 times advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship, held June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa. She had entered competition with the fifth-fastest 10k with a school-record time of 32:40.82. Wichita State's Aliphine Tuliamuk was first at 33:31.54.
"Becky Wade responded under tough conditions," stated Owl head coach Jim Bevan. "She was with the lead group for the first 5,700 meters, but was caught by the 12th and 13th runners. Becky fought them off and moved to 10th before being outkicked at the end. Tonight, she had to respond when things weren't going her way and she did. I am extremely proud of her mental toughness."
Another Owl athlete from Dallas' Urusuline Academy, freshman Claire Uke in the shot put, competed hard but did not advance. Uke posted a mark of 14.18m/46-6.25 and placed 40th.
"Claire Uke had an outstanding freshman year in finishing 40th in the West," said Bevan. "We are looking forward to having three more years of her competing and improving. She has a great future."
