March 16, 2013
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB track and field team took wins in the 4x100m relay, the 1500m, the 100m hurdles and the 200m at the Samford Multi and Invite in Birmingham, Ala.
"We really got a lot out of today's meet," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "We were using it to introduce the outdoor season, get some extra work in before the meat of the season is upon us. The distance athletes ran the 1500m and 800m and did a good job getting the season started."
The Blazers swept the top three of the 1500m run, and finished with six runners in the top-eight. Junior Elinor Kirk won with a time of 4:27.25, and was followed by senior Rhiannon Johns, who ran a 4:29.86. In third, senior Sarah Hudak crossed the finish line with a time of 4:34.54.
"Eli and Rhi picked up where they left off from indoor, and it'll be exciting to watch them all progress the rest of the season," Thomas added. "The sprinters did some off events and got some good work. The 100m hurdlers all ran great."
Junior Kate Brown followed in fifth with a time of 4:40.26, while Lauren Scott ran a 4:43.76 for sixth place. Anna Jarman ran a 4:57.32 for eighth place. Sophomore Kristie Leybourne finished the 1500m with a 5:05.38.
UAB won the 100m hurdles as sophomore Jessica Shelley finished with a time of 13.89. Burnett took fourth with a mark of 14.38. Shelley also ran a 12.92 in the 100m dash.
"Jessica Shelley shot out of the blocks and ended up setting a PR by almost a half second," Thomas continued. "She's really worked hard and it paid off today. All of the sprinters and hurdlers ran the 200m, and Alexis (Bates) started to show what she is capable of."
Junior Alexis Bates won the 200m dash with a time of 24.86, while junior Kyana White took third with a time of 25.35. Knox followed in sixth with a time of 25.72, while Harley ran a 25.83 and Lytrice Thomas followed with a 25.87. Burnett ran a 26.18 while freshman Breona Humphrey followed at 26.20.
In the long jump on day one, junior Kelli Smith finished in second with a jump of 19-00.50.
In the heptathlon events, sophomore Shelby Barker won the high jump with a high of 1.64m (5-04.50). In the 200m dash, Barker finished in fourth with a time of 25.33, and ran the 100m hurdles in 15.53. In the heptathlon shot put, Barker threw a long of 9.06m (29-08.75).
"More than anything, the team started off outdoors on a positive note, and picked up where they all left off from indoors," Thomas said. "We'll go back to work and get ready to race at Alabama Relays next weekend and get ready to dive in head first into the larger meets."
