Points Of Pride
UTEP recently celebrated its 90th anniversary. The university began as a mining and metallurgy college in 1914 and is located in the world's largest binational metropolitan area with a population of more than two million people.
For 38 years, UTEP was home to basketball coach Don Haskins, who broke color barriers by starting five black players in a championship game. The Miners defeated top-ranked Kentucky to capture the NCAA title in 1966. UTEP is the only school in the state of Texas to win a national crown in men's basketball.
