XC: Sept. 26 Athletes of the Week

IRVING, TexasSherilene Gelderblom bested an 11-year program record and helped FIU earn its first-ever regional ranking on her way to earning Conference USA Female Athlete of the Week. Charlotte’s Tom Nobles notched his third C-USA Male Athlete of the Week nod of the season following a personal-best showing this past weekend.

C-USA Male Athlete of the Week – Tom Nobles, Charlotte, RS Jr., Cary, N.C.
Among a solid pool of competitors at the Virginia Panorama Farms Invitational on Saturday, Nobles led the charge in pacing Charlotte to a third-place finish ahead of three regionally-ranked squads. The three-time C-USA Male Athlete of the Week inked a new personal-best 8K time of 24:06 as the 49ers’ first to finish, taking sixth among all racers.

C-USA Female Athlete of the Week – Sherilene Gelderblom, FIU, So., Middelburg, South Africa
Gelderblom rewrote FIU history this week, setting a school-record time of 17:21.2 in the 5K to finish second at the University of Florida Mountain Dew Gator Invitational on Saturday. The performance bested a mark of 17:48 that stood in the program for 11 years. The sophomore’s individual finish lifted FIU to second place among the 32-team field, leading to the program’s first regional ranking in history. The USTFCCCA ranked FIU 15th in Monday’s South Region poll.
