ITF: Jan. 17 Athletes of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Five different programs earned Conference USA indoor track & field weekly awards, led by Middle Tennessee sophomore Abike Egbeniyi. Egbeniyi pushed into first place in the nation after a 2:04.47 in the 800m at the Commodore Invitational and earned the C-USA Female Track Athlete of the Week award. Nabbing the Male Track Athlete of the Week honor was UTEP freshman Emmanuel Korir. The Kenya native also moved into first nationally in the 800m with a 1:46.50 mark. On the field side, Rice senior Cybil Obiozor and UTSA senior Elesha Alyn split the female award following a pair of superb triple jump showings, while WKU senior Ventavius Sears notched the third-best long jump mark in the country (7.78m) and the 12th-best triple jump (15.63m) to snatch the male field award.

FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
ABIKE EGBENIYI, MIDDLE TENNESSEE | SO., LAGOS, NIGERIA | 800M

Egbeniyi was critical in Middle Tennessee’s success at the Commodore Invitational. She took first in the 800m, while last week’s C-USA Female Track Athlete of the Week Agnus Abu claimed third with a time of 2:05.93.

FEMALE FIELD CO-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
ELESHA ALYN, UTSA | SR., MIAMI, FLORIDA | TRIPLE JUMP

Alyn won the triple jump at Saturday's season-opening Texas A&M Team Invitational.  After fouling on her first two attempts, she skipped to a personal-best measurement of 40-7 (12.37m) on her third jump of the afternoon to top the field of eight athletes. The senior from Miami captured the gold medal by five inches over Baylor's Rachel Toliver and it was an improvement of a foot and two inches from her previous career best. She currently sits near the top of the C-USA leaderboard and is 29th nationally in the early going this season.

CYBIL OBIOZOR, RICE | SR., PEARLAND, TEXAS | TRIPLE JUMP

Obiozor claimed the top triple jump mark in the early portion of the 2017 season with a jump of 12.47m to place second overall at the Leonard Hilton Memorial. Obiozor’s leap is ranked 23rd nationally and tops in C-USA.

MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
EMMANUEL KORIR, UTEP | FR., ITEN, KENYA | 800M

Korir broke the UTEP school record and posted the national top time in the 800m with a 1:46.50 mark. The record was previously held by Elias Koech (2008), who clocked a time of 1:46.77.

MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
VENTAVIUS SEARS, WKU | SR., COLUMBUS, GEORGIA | LONG JUMP, TRIPLE JUMP, 4X400

Sears pieced together a phenomenal week, moving into the WKU top three in the long jump (7.78m) and the triple jump (15.63m). His long jump ranks third in the NCAA and is a new career-best mark, while the triple jump was 12th nationally. Both jumps lead C-USA.
