GOLF: Oct. 5 C-USA Golfers of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Freshman Conor Purcell of Charlotte earned Conference USA Men’s Golfer of the Week honors after finishing in the runner up spot by one stroke at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. FIU senior Camila Serrano was named the C-USA Women's Golfer of the Week after tying for 12th in a field of 82 golfers at the Johnie Imes Invitational.

C-USA Men's Golfer of the Week – Conor Purcell, Charlotte, Fr., Dublin, Ireland
Purcell nearly took home medalist honors, finishing in the runner up spot by one stroke at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. His opponent birdied the 17th and 18th holes to top the 49er by one. Purcell began his tournament with a five-under round of 65, starting with back-to-back birdies and finishing with his fifth and final one in his clean round of 65. In round two, Purcell drained four more birdies in a 71 before concluding Tuesday with his 68 (-2). The freshman went up against four top 25 teams, including No. 3 Auburn, No. 7 Florida State, No. 11 Baylor and No. 21 UNLV. This is Purcell’s first C-USA Player of the Week award.
 
C-USA Women's Golfer of the Week – Camila Serrano, FIU, Sr., Bogota, Colombia
Serrano provided FIU's steadiest performer as the Panthers finished third in a field of 15 teams at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Missouri. Serrano posted a pair of rounds under par to lead FIU with a 1-over 217 after three rounds. The Panthers moved from a tie for fourth into third place outright. Three of her six rounds so far have been under par and she has an individual record of 131-12 after two tournaments. This is Serrano’s first C-USA Player of the Week award this season, and second of her career.
