Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky named the 12 recipients of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Awards today. This is the fifth year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008. The conference annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
FOX College Sports has announced that it will televise 10 Conference USA football games this fall. The FCS schedule includes seven league games and will involve 12 current C-USA schools, as well as two future league members.
After winning a national title in the men's steeplechase, sophomore ANTONY ROTICH of UTEP has been named Conference USA Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, as voted on by the league's head coaches. Winning the same award on the women's side for the second consecutive year was sophomore OCTAVIOUS FREEMAN of UCF. This year's Field Athlete of the Year accolades go to first-time winners in senior VANESSA JULES of Marshall and sophomore MANUEL ZIEGLER of Memphis.
