UAB won its first NCAA Softball Regional title Sunday with a 3-2 win against UCLA in 13 innings to advance to the Super Regional. Junior Leigh Streetman struck out seven batters and did not allow an earned run in 7.2 innings of relief to earn the win. Blazers senior center fielder Whitney Fletcher was the hero, tripling to right-center field in the bottom of the 13th to score Heather Pearson. UAB will play No. 2 national seed Florida in a best-of-three series for a trip to the Women's College World Series. UAB is the second C-USA team in the past three seasons to advance to the Super Regional (Houston, 2011).
Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced today that the conference has secured an agreement with the 2013 Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman benefiting the USO. C-USA will provide a team to face an opponent from the Atlantic Coast Conference in the Washington, D.C.-based bowl. This year's game will be played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md., on Friday, December 27 at 2:30 p.m. ET and televised by ESPN.
Two seniors, six juniors and three sophomores comprise the 2013 Conference USA Baseball All-Academic team as selected by the sports information contacts at each of the nine baseball schools. In order to be eligible for the recognition, student-athletes must hold a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, be of at least sophomore academic standing and be a starter of key reserve for their team.
